Nothing to choose — here is what will happen.
- A PDF is read back to front: the last line says where the index is, and the index says where everything else is. Break that and nothing can be found, even though the content is usually still there.
- This scans the file for its objects and writes a fresh index over them. Nothing is invented, and anything genuinely missing stays missing.
- Bookmarks and form definitions that the rebuilt index cannot reach are dropped rather than guessed at.
