The defaults find real edits and ignore the noise a re-export leaves behind.

What to compare

Words and appearance disagree more often than you would expect, so both is the default.

Words and appearanceSlower, and the only setting that catches a change to something with no text — a signature, a logo, a chart.Words onlyFast. Reads the text layer, so it finds nothing in a scan.Appearance onlyCompares the pages as pictures. For when the text layer is missing or not to be trusted.

What not to count as a change

Each of these is a difference that usually is not one.

Ignore punctuationA document re-exported with different quotation marks reads as unchanged.Ignore capitalsOff by default: in a document, a capital usually is a change.Follow pages that movedWorks out which page matches which. Off, one inserted page makes every page after it look rewritten.
